Why Balloons are Evil

Friends, it's a well-known fact that the circus is FUN. Okay, we could probably debate some justice issues (hello, have you ever seen Dumbo?), but watching a woman doing tricks 20 feet in the air? Fun. Dogs jumping through hoops and balancing on balls? Fun. A dude swallowing fire? Quadruple fun, albeit a little scary.

A circus act came to town, and we thought, Hey, let's go have some fun! It was reasonably priced (but only because kids got in free), and obviously low-budget (only 3 performers, including the dogs - one woman had 3 or 4 different acts), but okay. It was fun.

But there were live-and-in-person commercials in between Every Act. An obvious ploy... a couple of kids around us got one of everything they were selling, and they whined for more. Others got one of one thing they were selling, and they whined for more. Our kids whined maybe once or twice, but we simply explained that the memories would last longer than the light saber, we didn't have enough money for that thing, and be grateful that you're even at the circus. They said okay, and had fun.

But then they brought out ginormous balloons, and I fell for it. I wheedled and convinced Matthew that the kids sould have a balloon - who doesn't love a balloon? They weren't that expensive! So we got them each a balloon, and they all but stopped paying attention to the circus.

Then we got in the car and they started arguing about what color they got. And fighting over who was touching whose balloon. And bouncing them around, accidentally into the front seat. And that's when I confiscated the damn balloons. When we got home, instead of regaling our house mates with tales of wonder and amazement, the children fought over the balloons.

LB's balloon popped the next day and EP was loathe to share, so the fun just continued!

So here's the moral of the story, folks: Balloons are evil.

[we can't all be witty like Aesop]

P.S. Thanks for your supportive comments (online and in person) concerning my last post... it's been better since I posted it, but still a work in progress. Keep the prayers coming, please!
